After a week of above average temps the first blossom on our John Downie Crab Apple is out. And with the sun has come the dreaded hay fever!

Beautiful weather

It certainly feels like Spring. A walk on the hill behind Lancing was wonderful, saw several butterflies, Peacock, Comma, Brimstone and Small tortoiseshell. There were lambs in the fields and the air was full of bird song, especially the wonderful Skylark. We spotted a couple of Buzzards soaring high over Steepdown, these were being harassed by crows.

Clocks go forward and Spring is here!

We took a walk in Tottington Woods this afternoon to see how the season was coming on. The warm sunshine brought out Peacock and Comma butterflies and several strange looking flies, which I’m told are Bee-Flies. The woodland has been managed over the winter by Tottington Woodlanders, this was evident by the neat piles of wood in the area. Regular coppicing will increase the light to the woodland floor, helping the wood anemones and primroses to flourish and create open sheltered glades for the summer butterflies.

The bird song was lovely to hear and it will only be a matter of weeks until the Bluebells will be out. We’ll be back.

This lovely woodland is in Small Dole, there is a brown sign on the main road nearly opposite the Fox pub, close to the Mackley Industrial Estate.

First butterfly sighting!

At last my first butterfly of the year. Found basking on a warm south facing fence in south Lancing. A pristine Comma.

Lady birds and Linnets

We enjoyed a recent walk up on Lancing Ring in the February sunshine to see if there were signs of Spring. Patches of gorse were looking splendid in the sunshine and as I looked more closely we noticed that there were many of our native ladybirds to be seen.

In sheltered sunny spots we found sweet violets in bloom too. Alas, no early butterfly sighting as yet, but it was good to see that nature is slowly waking up again.

A noisy flock of around 30 Linnets were briefly in some small trees at the Halewick Lane carpark later in the week.
